    Hosting Management: is Bluehost User-Friendly?

Yes, Bluehost is incredibly user-friendly. Their combination of website management tools and cPanel creates a seamless experience that makes it easy to navigate no matter your technical ability.

Bluehost makes creating a website incredibly simple. When you first sign into your account, you’ll be prompted to create a website with just 4 easy steps. First, you’ll be asked to pick a name for your site which will act as the address, or URL, of your site. After that, Bluehost will guide you through the process of choosing a theme.

Moreover, Bluehost generously provides one free WordPress website migration that you may find beneficial.

If you’d like, you can opt to skip all the steps and manually set up your website.

Now, if you choose to go the manual route instead, you will end up on the “My Sites” page like the screenshot below.

As demonstrated above, the admin panel is well-structured, neat, and simple to use.

The left-side menu is your go-to source for your daily tasks. For instance, within the Domains section of the panel, you can purchase domains, assign redirects, and transfer domains hosted with a different provider.

In the “My Sites Section”, you’ll find all the features necessary for managing your sites and adding new ones as well.

Finally, the “Advanced Menu Option” will land you on the conventional cPanel interface, as seen in the image below.

cPanel remains one of the most widely used web hosting control panel to this day. Nevertheless, Bluehost simplified it and modernized the look by adding some personal touches.

If you are already accustomed to cPanel, there is one small variation in functionality. The “Domain Management Section” has become part of the main interface now so users will not find it inside their cPanel anymore.

So, what’s the purpose of the Bluehost admin panel?

It’s mostly the go-to for web hosting and website management duties, such as changing the PHP version or accessing databases. Plus, you can get a free email there.

    Bluehost website management tools

After you’ve set up WordPress, there are bundles of different tasks that can be done. With Bluehost, users now have access to performance and security optimizations, plugin management tools, and general WordPress settings. All this can be reached in the “My Sites Management Section”, one of the most efficient tools we’ve used.

Unlock all the tools necessary to manage and monitor your website by navigating to My Sites – then “Click Manage Site”, this is where you’ll find a wide range of useful settings.

After clicking “manage site” it will take you to the management section of the panel like the screenshot below.

    • In the Performance section, you have the option to configure site caching and Content Delivery Network (CDN) for a slight increase in speed. This is particularly beneficial for those who are not located close to your website’s physical server.
    • In the Security section, you have the power to activate or deactivate free SSL options, add extra protection, and check whether your WordPress core files are still intact. Moreover, the Check core WordPress files tool can assist in detecting any errors after updates or if you altered something using your file manager.
    • The Plugins tool enables you to conveniently manage and update WordPress plugins from inside your Dashboard, as well as activate and deactivate them. This feature is ideal if you don’t have auto-updates enabled on your WordPress dashboard; you can quickly update any plugin with just a click.
    • The Settings section makes customizing WordPress sites effortless, as it is packed with settings for you to configure. Here, you can update your site URL in case of any changes, specify how many content revisions should be stored on your WordPress, disable and close comments, set the number of comments to display per page, as well as set up a Coming Soon Page or delete your entire website with just one click.

Frankly, this section alone warrants a full Bluehost WordPress review by itself—you can take care of every part of your website from one interface, making managing the site much easier.

Bluehost email: is a professional email included?

Absolutely! Bluehost provides you with the amazing benefit of 5 professional email addresses with its cheapest shared plan, at no extra cost.

To create an email account, go to cPanel and select the “Email Accounts” option.

Now, locate the ‘Create’ button and click it to get started.

Next, simply fill out the username and password fields, then click ‘Create’ to complete the process.

Lastly, you will need to choose an email client. With two options available – Roundcube or Horde – both are not the most up-to-date solutions, but they do offer a reliable service that can get the job done.

Keep in mind that Bluehost email hosting operates on the same server as your website. Considering this, these email accounts should not be utilized for big email campaigns or frequent promotional activities.

All in all, Bluehost makes setting up a professional email account a breeze, as seen in the steps above.

    Does Bluehost offer site migration?

Bluehost offers two website migration options: a free and a paid option. Although anyone may take advantage of the paid migration, the free migration comes with a few requirements. With that being said, let’s dive deeper into each option and explore it further.

Free migration is only free for first-time users with one WordPress site; email and domain names are not transferable.

Paid migration for $149.99: New or existing users can migrate up to 5 websites and 20 email accounts.

    Requirements for free migration:

    • Free migration is only for (first-time) shared hosting customers,
    • The website must be running on WordPress version 4.7 or later,
    • The website must be running on PHP 7.0 or later,
    • Filesize must not exceed 2GB,
    • Database size must not exceed 40MB,
    • Has no proprietary features,
    • The website must be malware free,
    • Not being a multi-site.

Just a heads up: Bluehost does not provide migration services for those utilizing VPS, reseller, and dedicated server hosting accounts. Furthermore, this option is like the free migration plan; it does not include a domain transfer either.

    WordPress staging tool

Bluehost offers an essential staging tool for your WordPress website. Utilizing this tool enables you to explore new ideas and test updates before they are released onto your live website; this can save you a lot of frustration when building or updating your website.

Generating a staging copy is easy. Simply click the “Create Staging Site” button to duplicate your website.

A word of advice: Before making any modifications to your staging site, hit the “Clone to Staging” button. This way, you know you editing the most up-to-date version of your site, and this is a surefire approach to ensure it.

    Marketing tools

The Marketing Tools Section of Bluehost is designed to give customers an intuitive and straightforward platform for optimizing their online presence. Featuring the ability to order SEO plans, integrate Google Ads, and list your business on Google My Business.

Now, let’s look at how these tools can help your business:

    • Google My Business – Google My Business makes it easy to get your business spotted on Google Maps and featured in searches such as “restaurant near me”. You can usually set up a Google account to make this happen, but Bluehost integration offers an easier way – you can do it right from your hosting account.
    • Bluehost SEO – Bluehost offers SEO services to its customers for a small monthly fee. We will touch upon this service below.
    • Google Ads – With Google Ads you can broadcast your message to the precise audience you are looking for – making it one of the most effective marketing techniques available. Bluehost makes it easy to get your ad campaigns off the ground with its user-friendly platform. You can track ads, run A/B testing, and even benefit from Google Ads/Bing Credits of up to $200 on your first campaign.

Bluehost offers 2 SEO plans to its customers: one for $5.95/mo. and the other for $19.95/mo.

The $5.95/mo. start plan offers the targeting of 10 keywords, a weekly ranking scan, 2 competitor reports, a step-by-step SEO plan, and a monthly progress report.

The $19.95/mo. grow plan offers the targeting of 20 keywords, daily ranking scans, 4 competitor reports, proactive notifications and alerts, a step-by-step SEO plan, and a prioritized improvement list.

All in all, Bluehost simplifies the task of managing and promoting your website no matter if you are a novice or an experienced user. Every tool is simple to grasp, and most processes are almost automatic.

    Bluehost Performance and Uptime

Bluehost blew us away with its remarkable results; the shared web hosting server our website was hosted on, was super-fast.

To start with, we ran a test to measure the host’s uptime using Uptime Robot:

With the goal of optimum performance in mind, we monitored Bluehost for 10 days. In this period, the provider had 100% uptime with no downtime recorded.

Even though Bluehost had 100% uptime during testing, this does not cover unexpected events or required server maintenance. Bluehost, however, does guarantee a 99.99% uptime.

What’s more, Bluehost achieved remarkable results in its average response time – averaging 252ms.

In contrast to the average 300ms response time observed with other providers, Bluehost far surpassed our expectations.

Undeniably, Bluehost is an exceptionally dependable platform that features good uptime and rapid response times.

    Bluehost website speed test

For this section of our Bluehost review, we conducted a speed test to calculate the loading time of an empty and fully built website. The tool we used for this test was GTmetrix.

To ensure a thorough understanding of the results, here are 3 essential metrics:

    • The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – is how long it takes to load the biggest piece of content on a page. It is imperative to remember that Google considers a website’s loading speed when deciding its position on the search results page. For optimal output, ensure that your LCP is below 2.5 seconds.
    • Fully Loaded Time – A website’s loading speed is defined by the amount of time it takes to become fully operational. Websites must be aware of prolonged loading times, as we all know users become aggravated and abandon the site if it takes more than four seconds to load. Therefore, swiftness is essential for a successful website.
    • Speed Index– For a superior user experience, your page content should be visible to users in 1.3 seconds or less.

To begin with, we tested the load time of an empty WordPress site from three different locations. The hosting plan we tested was the basic shared plan. Astonishingly, the UK test server achieved the most successful outcomes with an LCP score of only 202ms, despite being hosted on a U.S. server.

Bluehost’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) results in the USA and Mumbai, India turned out to be quite good, with a result of 219ms in the USA and 255ms in Mumbai, India. The results for all three locations were good, loading within the 2.5 s mark set by Google for e-commerce sites.

As illustrated in the screenshot below, Bluehost achieved remarkable performance results on a blank site when tested from a server located in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Even though our website was hosted on a U.S. server, it was nothing short of extraordinary. Our fully loaded time was an incredible 299ms—now that’s fast!

Now, what would happen if we switched the empty site to a fully built one?

After the site was fully built, the LCP increased to 887ms from 219ms; it slowed down a bit but was still lightning fast. Our five-page WordPress website with approximately five images on the homepage was loaded in 887ms – see the screenshot below.

The fully loaded time for the website was remarkable, at 1.1s–well below the recommended maximum load time of 3 seconds–which is impressive, for sure.

The screenshot below offers a comprehensive overview of the data associated with the fully developed website.

As seen in the screenshot above, Bluehost’s speed index time was a remarkable 824ms – that’s just under a second. This exceptional performance showcases that with a completely built website, you can still achieve great results.

By selecting a server that is situated close to your target audience, you can ensure fast page loading times and provide an optimum user experience. Bluehost has established an impressive presence worldwide with six data centers strategically placed in different countries, two of which are in the United States.

Ultimately, Bluehost’s performance is remarkably impressive; the website loads fast and with no downtime recorded. Nevertheless, Bluehost can level up by upgrading its servers.

Security – How Secure is Bluehost?

Bluehost has an impressive array of security features, but to utilize and activate them you must either pay for the services provided by Bluehost or purchase a third-party provider.

Let’s dive into the crucial safety steps Bluehost has taken to guarantee protection:

    • SSL certificates – every Bluehost’s shared plan comes with a free Let’s Encrypt SSL certificate, plus additional premium versions for those who need it. The free option should suffice most clients’ needs; however, if more comprehensive coverage is desired there are some paid alternatives available.
    • DDoS protection – Bluehost utilizes Cloudflare to protect against DDoS. A DDoS attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt your website by flooding it with an overwhelming amount of traffic from compromised systems. By activating Cloudflare, you can secure your origin IP address from malicious attacks by rerouting traffic through Cloudflare’s proxy server.
    • Firewalls – although Bluehost doesn’t have a default firewall, Bluehost uses iptables as a firewall for their dedicated and VPS plans. If you’re currently utilizing shared hosting, then we suggest turning to free plugins as an ideal solution; like Jetpack and Wordfence; they are both extremely efficient security tools.
    • Automatic backups – useful in the event of an emergency, this tool can be a lifesaver. It takes a snapshot of your website daily, thus allowing you to restore it easily. The choice plus and pro plan include this feature; however, if you don’t opt for either plan, it will cost an additional $2.99/mo. via a third-party tool.

All in all, Bluehost’s security options do not offer the most comprehensive or advanced features compared to those of other providers. Unfortunately, we are obligated to pay for basic security measures that are so vital to us.

    Is Bluehost Support Helpful?

Bluehost customer support is available 24/7 through live chat and phone. But that’s not all – they also have an extensive knowledge base filled with a vast array of topics. From frequently asked questions to tutorials and guides.

During this review, we tested out the live chat support system and found it to be quite satisfactory. It only took a minute or so for an agent to log on and address our inquiries. At no point during our conversation were we subjected to any upselling attempts. Nevertheless, the customer service representatives remained courteous and answered all the questions.

Every time you contact live chat, they ask you the same 3 questions before moving forward, your first and last name, primary domain, and authenticate your account with the token number sent to your registered email address. We think that’s a good security feature.

Our issue was logging into our Bluehost cPanel, we kept getting an error that prevented us from being able to. This issue was frustrating and time-consuming, as it took around 30 minutes of back-and-forth chatting before the problem was resolved. Our support tech provided us with a different login link than we had been using before, which ultimately ended up fixing the issue.

This time we contacted Bluehost to just ask a question; this whole thing was fast, only taking about five minutes. We asked how many customers were hosted on the same server, but unfortunately, support told us that this information cannot be known. Nonetheless, we do know that their servers are fast and reliable. The screenshot below was the conversation.

For those who want the highest level of service possible, Bluehost offers Blue Sky a premium customer support package. For a monthly fee, you can gain access to on-demand ticket support, assistance with account access, website backup assistance, and design assistance—just to name a few.

To sum it up, Bluehost’s customer support is excellent. You can quickly get professional assistance to address any of your issues. In addition, you can easily access valuable information by searching the knowledge base on your own.

This means that Bluehost technically owns your domain name, but you have the right if you continue to pay the annual fee.

Once the lease expires, Bluehost has the right to reclaim the domain name and make it available to other customers. However, if you decide to leave Bluehost before your lease is up, you may be able to transfer your domain name to another registrar.

Overall, while Bluehost technically owns your domain name, they allow you to use it as long as you keep paying the annual fee. This arrangement can be beneficial for both parties, as it gives Bluehost some level of security against customers who might otherwise neglect to pay their bills, and it gives customers the flexibility to switch providers if they are not happy with Bluehost’s service.

    Does Bluehost own your content?

No, Bluehost does not own your content. You retain all rights to your content, and you can do whatever you like with it. Bluehost does not claim any ownership rights to your content, so you can rest assured that your work is safe with them.

Bluehost also offers several tools and resources to help you manage your content and protect your rights. For example, Bluehost’s Terms of Service include a clause that prohibits users from posting infringing or copyrighted material.
