InMotion Review 2023: Is It A Good Fit For You?

Updated on December 2, 2023 – Written By: Shant Alexanian

In this in-depth InMotion web hosting review, we will go through all the good and the bad of the provider, from pricing to ease of use, performance, security, customer support, and more.

InMotion Hosting has been around for over two decades and you probably haven’t heard much about them because they don’t advertise heavily on social media or other advertising platforms. That doesn’t mean that InMotion Hosting isn’t a big player in the web hosting sector.

InMotion Hosting has come a long way in the last year, and it’s clear that it is continuing to make changes to reach a larger and broader audience, the company introduced a new look to its website and updated some of its plans.

However, InMotion Hosting has always been more of an enterprise-level hosting provider with many VPS and dedicated hosting options. It wasn’t cheap by any means but people choose it because they know that reliability comes at a price – something no one can afford to compromise on when you need your website up 24/7/365 days a year.

InMotion Hosting had left shared hosting behind for a while. But has it been able to turn things around and compete with the industry titans in the world of shared web hosting? It’s not easy to be the best of breed in an industry with giants like HostGator, and Bluehost, who offer similar services. But can InMotion Hosting take on competitors with more features and better price points?

Well, we went ahead and purchased a shared hosting plan from InMotion to put it through the wringer and find out if InMotion can compete with some of the top shared hosting providers. We can assure you that we have taken great care when writing this in-depth review, and it will be worth your time.

    InMotion Hosting Plans and Pricing

InMotion Hosting offers a range of hosting plans to suit every budget. The most affordable plan is shared hosting, which starts at only $2.29 a month. In addition, it provides WordPress hosting plans, VPS hosting, reseller options, and even dedicated servers.

    Hosting types Best for

Shared hosting is a type of web hosting service where many websites are hosted on a single server. This is in contrast to other types of hosting services, such as dedicated hosting, where each website has its server.

Managed WordPress hosting is a type of hosting specifically designed for WordPress websites. WordPress is a content management system (CMS) that powers millions of websites around the world. While WordPress is a very versatile platform, it can be challenging to manage WordPress hosting on your own. This is where managed WordPress hosting comes in.

VPS hosting is a type of web hosting that uses virtual private servers to provide more resources and flexibility than shared hosting. Each website on a VPS has its dedicated portion of the server, which provides more security and performance than if the site was sharing server space with other sites.

Reseller hosting is a type of web hosting in which a user leases space on a server that they own or control. They then resell that space to other users, usually for profit. Reseller hosting is often used by web developers and designers who want to offer their clients a complete package of web hosting services. Many resellers use reseller hosting as a way to start their web hosting businesses.

Dedicated server hosting is a type of Internet hosting in which a server is leased to a single client. The client has full control over the server, including its operating system, hardware, and software. This type of hosting is ideal for businesses that have high traffic levels or require a high level of security.

InMotion’s most popular shared hosting plan is the core plan at $2.29 per month. It’s what makes them competitive against brands like Bluehost or HostGator without this low-cost web-hosting package, they would be slightly higher priced than other premium hosting providers like SiteGround and WP engine. In a move to make its product line broad spanning in terms of features offered for those looking into shared servers across the globe.

Nevertheless, InMotion Hosting shared plans include a plethora of fantastic amenities, such as a free SSL certificate, security suite, unlimited bandwidth, and free email accounts. Plus, all plans excluding the Lite plan come with free domain registration.

Inmotion hosting offers 4 shared hosting plans:

Core plan- 2 websites, 10 email addresses, free SSL certificate, 100GB SSD, unlimited bandwidth, and free advertising credit.

    $2.29/month.

Launch plan- Unlimited websites, free domain & SSL certificate, unlimited emails, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited NVMe SSD, and free advertising credit.

    $4.99/month.

Power plan- Unlimited websites, free domain & SSL certificate, unlimited emails, unlimited bandwidth, automatic backups, website builder, advanced caching.

    $4.99/month.

Pro plan- Unlimited websites, dedicated IP, free domain & SSL certificate, unlimited emails, unlimited bandwidth, automatic backups, website builder, advanced caching, and you also get a pro-SLA uptime guarantee of 99.99% which is awesome.

    $12.99/month.

On the whole, InMotion Hosting provides exceedingly generous hosting packages. Despite that, there are still a few items you must take into account. For example, if you decide to go with the Core plan, you will have to buy a domain for it or pay an extra fee for an automated backup service. While the plan offers a good selection of resources for a good price, not all plans are equal in value.

The Core plan is a great option for beginners who are starting their blog or portfolio website. It’s also perfect if you want to build an online retail store with products such as furniture or clothes (E-Commerce). The Pro plan can support larger sites; it might be ideal if your website requires more features than allowed by the cheaper plan.

This leaves us with 2 other hosting plans: Launch and Power

The launch is the perfect hosting service to get if you’re looking for something small, yet save on costs. Both Launch and Power offer very similar features but there are some differences worth noting – while the power plan offers 12X more speed and advanced caching, it just might be a better deal to roll with the power plan since the prices are the same for now.

    Best Value

Consider the Power Plan if you want a low monthly rate; you will have to pay 3 years upfront. The price is $4.99/mo., and you will be locked in for 3 years.

Finally, InMotion Hosting offers a 90-Day Money-Back Guarantee instead of the average 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee which is unheard of in the web hosting industry.

Overall, InMotion Hosting prices are not the lowest in the market, but they still offer good features for what you pay. Nevertheless, it’s cheaper than some competitors that have similar shared plans for small businesses, yet with an affordable price tag.

Account Management Panel – How Easy Is it To Use?

With its easy-to-use account management platform, InMotion Hosting makes hosting your website a breeze. This platform simplifies user navigation with a seamless combination of native Account Management Panel and cPanel making it easier to use. Nevertheless, there are times when these two appear to clash with one another. Moreover, for a more improved experience, a couple of UX options could be enhanced.

Even though the similarities between the two control panels are very much alike, we should note that they aren’t entirely the same.

Logging into your account now takes you straight to the Account Management Panel (AMP); as seen in the screenshot below.

The similarities between InMotion hosting’s native AMP and cPanel are hard to miss; however, this is not cPanel just yet. You can get to cPanel by clicking the orange cPanel button see below.

Now, after clicking on the cPanel icon, you will be directed to a page that looks like the screenshot below. Here, you will be able to manage everything from email and domains to files, SSL, and all other things. The screenshot below this one shows more of the cPanel.

The InMotion Hosting platform has a custom skin on its cPanel so that it seamlessly integrates with the rest of the interface.

Below is a look at some of the other things you can find in the cPanel. We couldn’t fit everything in one screenshot, nor could we fit it all on two screenshots; anyway, this is where you’ll find everything from WordPress installation to Google Analytics set up to Softaculous app installer. We will be talking more about Softaculous further down in the article.

To sum it up, InMotions control panel stands out for its modern and visually-appealing design, making it simple and intuitive to use for any level of user. Its navigation options are easy to understand, allowing users to find the functions they need with minimal effort. It has an abundance of useful features that make managing projects quicker and smoother.

    WordPress Website Builder BoldGrid

One of the most helpful features that we’ve encountered while creating this InMotion Hosting review is the inclusion of BoldGrid Website Builder. This platform has been carefully crafted to provide users with the best possible experience when utilizing WordPress, as it includes a suite of plugins that allow you to customize and tailor the content management system to create a unique, visually appealing website.

We love BoldGrid, and for good reason. For starters, its user-friendly interface makes it easy to create beautiful websites with no coding knowledge. It uses a drag-and-drop editor so you can have full control over the design, and it’s incredibly intuitive, so you won’t have to spend weeks learning how to use it.

BoldGrid has a good mix of pre-built templates and customization options to make your website design come together seamlessly. The company offers an array of tools that are both intuitive as well as powerful, making it easy for users from any background or skill level in web development.

    • The template choices are responsive and easy to use.
    • The templates are customizable, so you can make them suit your unique needs.
    • You can use a variety of tools to make it easy for you and your customers.

All the tools seem to be designed with newbies in mind. It’s easy enough that even someone who has never built a website before can create one looking professional and presentable within minutes.

Now after you’ve chosen your template, it’s time to start customizing. You can change fonts and colors as much or little that suits you.

You don’t have to limit yourself to just one specific category when choosing a template design; the freedom to customize each design to your style allows you to explore different looks and layouts, giving you the chance to make each design unique.

Once you activate the template, it will automatically import. all of the associated pages for that specific layout design with demo content. This means that you have the perfect starting point for creating your website/blog. Just add a few of your touches, such as some graphics and unique content, and you’ll have a stunning website before you know it.

We discovered that the simplest and fastest way to get up and running was by swapping out the demo content and images with your own into the existing structured layout. But BoldGrid has so much more potential than that. For a truly personalized look, you can spend time dragging and dropping each element to create an original design. Doing this will ensure that the result is something unique.

You’ll be able to do all this directly on the page or a post that you want to edit.

Furthermore, there are additional plugins like the “Post and Page Builder” plugin that allows you to craft your own unique designs.

All in all, BoldGrid offers a good amount of features that enable users to create stunning and professional-looking websites quickly, regardless of their level of expertise. Whether you’re an experienced web developer or someone just starting, BoldGrid has something for everyone. Its easy-to-use drag-and-drop builder makes getting a website up simple.

Setting Up a Professional Email With InMotion Hosting

Setting up a new email account with InMotion is a super-simple process. InMotion makes the process seamless.

Log into your cPanel, then click the “Email Accounts” icon in the “Email” section.

Once you do that, click on “Create”

Now, you will have to create a username and password and then click Create.

When that is all complete, you will be able to navigate to your account easily through the “Email Accounts” icon.

Now you should be all set up with a new professional email.

All in all, creating a new email account with InMotion Hosting is straightforward. With just a few clicks, you can be up and running in no time. The nice thing is that you get 10 email addresses with the cheapest shared hosting plan.

InMotion Hosting for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses

InMotion Hosting is renowned for providing robust, reliable hosting solutions tailored to the needs of businesses. When shared hosting just won’t cut it, the provider provides robust VPS and dedicated server plans for those with more demanding needs.

    VPS Hosting

Hosting packages from InMotion Hosting is perfect for websites that have outgrown the shared hosting phase. Their managed VPS options start at $19.99/mo., but if you’re looking to get your hands on an unmanaged server with cheap prices then they offer this too.

Managed VPSes are perfect for those who want to have everything taken care of by their provider. You’ll get server management and cPanel access with free data and website migration options included in your plan.

All InMotion’s managed hosting plans come with a free SSL certificate, unlimited sites, dedicated IPs, and website transfer. You’ll also enjoy cPanel Web Host Master security configurations for your protection as well.

The best part about this plan is that all the plans are dedicated just to you. Depending on which plan you choose features range from 2-8 CPUs, 4GB RAM up to 8GB, and from 90GB to 360GB SSD storage worth of bandwidth for an unlimited duration.

What’s the point of having a high-powered VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting plan if it doesn’t deliver performance? InMotion has been able to maintain 99.99% uptime and an average response time that is speedy enough for most users.

Overall, “InMotion’s Hosting” services offer close to dedicated server-level VPS hosting without any compromise when it comes down to cost efficiency.

If you’re looking into running a small business that needs more power than what some other hosts offer or simply your shared web hosting plan is not working for your needs, then this solution will be perfect because not only do they provide amazing features, but they also give you a 90-day money-back guarantee which is awesome.

    Dedicated hosting

InMotion Hosting offers a wide range of hosting solutions, and if both shared or VPS options are not cutting it for your business’s needs then they also offer dedicated server hosting.

Private dedicated servers provide the best way to ensure your website’s stability and security. You’re able to use them for large websites with high traffic because you get exclusive access, as well as resources that are solely yours.

You can host your site with either managed hosting service for ($139.99/mo) or unmanaged hosting at a lower price of only ($99.99/mo). The choice entirely depends on what you are looking to do and how experienced you are, but one thing worth noting is there isn’t an increased renewal rate if you’re using dedicated web hosting.

There are two plans for private servers: Managed and Unmanaged. With a managed solution, InMotion Hosting takes care of your server’s security updates as well as providing you with their control panel; however with unmanaged hosting then you’d have to personally handle any matters related directly to the server itself such as updating software or securing data from hackers/malicious, etc.

While both offerings come with resources that vary from four up to twenty-four cores, one SSD to two TB NVMe SSD storage, and sixteen GB up to 192GB RAM they also provide their clients the best in class bandwidth of fifteen to twenty TB at an affordable price. This means if you need extra power for your site or business then InMotion’s dedicated server will give it all without breaking a sweat!

Dedicated hosting is the way to go if you want a fast, secure, and reliable server. Our site on InMotion’s plan shows an impressively high 99% uptime rate as well as an average response time under 410ms. That’s impressive if you ask me, you can even optimize it more to get a bit more performance.

Overall, InMotion’s dedicated hosting service is perfect for those looking to get their site up and running quickly. There are a variety of options available, all with reasonable pricing that will suit any budget.

It’s clear to us that InMotion Hosting focuses on businesses. The host offers powerful VPS and dedicated hosting options for reasonable prices, especially in comparison with the resources it gives back.

    InMotions Performance and Uptime

InMotion Hosting has always concentrated on providing optimal performance for business users. To assess the accuracy of this claim, we conducted multiple tests on their hosting services and found them to be both reliable and speedy. Whether you’re running a blog or a small-to-medium-sized business website, InMotion is up to the challenge.

To start, we ran a test to monitor the provider’s uptime using Uptime Robot.

We monitored InMotion for 92 hours, and during this period, we had three outages. The first outage lasted 3 minutes, the second one lasted 7 minutes, and the third one lasted 40 minutes; so in total, it was down for 50 minutes—all within the same hour. The first outage was at 11:36 pm, the second one was at 11:55 pm, and the third one was at 12:38 am.

We contacted InMotion technical support about the outages, to see what they had to say about it. Here is what they said; we briefly had a power outage. They stated it was atypical for them and that they like to boast about their usual 99.99% uptime. Inmotion does guarantee a 99.99% uptime.

We will have to give them the benefit of the doubt. The reason why is that the first eighty-one hours of monitoring, they had a 100% uptime. It was on the next to the last day of monitoring that they had the outage.

Let’s analyze InMotion’s response time; were impressed with how speedy it is at 357ms – that’s not too bad.

Despite the industry standard being a 600ms response time, InMotion was able to exceed expectations with an impressive 357ms response time.

Regardless of the short period of disruption, we remain passionate advocates of InMotion Hosting. It provided superior performance, reliability, and customer service.

    InMotion's hosting speed

To accurately assess InMotion’s performance, we ran a speed test with the GTmetrix tool to measure how quickly an empty and completed website can load.

To ensure you comprehend the outcomes, here are 3 critical metrics:

    • The Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) – is a crucial performance metric for websites, as it determines how quickly the most important content on a page becomes visible to users. Since Google considers loading speed when determining a website’s search engine rankings, webmasters and developers need to ensure that their LCPs remain below 2.5 seconds.
    • Fully Loaded Time is a vital element of user experience. Unfortunately, if a website is slow to load, users become annoyed and abandon the page in as little as four seconds. Websites owners must be aware of this time frame and make sure that their pages are fast loading.
    • Speed Index – a metric that measures how quickly your page content becomes visible to users- and it should be done in 1.3 seconds or less. This can be challenging, especially with the increasing complexity of modern web pages, but putting effort into improving the loading speed of your page can pay dividends in terms of user experience.

We decided to test the load time of an empty WordPress site, using a pro hosting plan, from three different geographical locations. To evaluate our results, we used the LCP score as a metric. We found that our US-hosted site had the highest and most favorable results, with a score of only 273ms. This is an exemplary figure that speaks to the power and reliability of our hosting plan.

Surprisingly, the performance of InMotion’s Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) was quite remarkable in both India and the United Kingdom. Looking at the figures, it clocked in at 691ms in the UK and 1.8 seconds in India. This result is particularly impressive since Google recommends an LCP of 2 seconds as the threshold for acceptable performance. InMotion was able to pass this part of the test with flying colors.

As demonstrated in the screenshot below, InMotion Hosting delivered an extraordinary performance with its welcome page when tested from a server located in Chicago, IL, USA.

Although tested on a U.S. server, the outcomes in the U.S. were much better than anticipated – clocking at an impressive 320ms fully loaded time! Amazingly speedy results, don’t you think?

So, what would transpire if we substituted the empty page with a completely constructed website?

After constructing the website, the LCP time of our BoldGrid website increased to just 1.2 seconds, which is undoubtedly still fast. Our three-page site was fully loaded with 8 images—an impressive feat to say the least.

The Fully Loaded Time for the website was incredibly fast at 2.2s, far exceeding the ideal maximum load time of 3 seconds.

The screenshot below provides further insights into the fully developed website analytics.

As shown in the screenshot above, InMotion Hosting achieved an incredible speed index time of 1.1 seconds – far faster than a blink of an eye. This remarkable achievement demonstrates that even with a fully built website, it’s still possible to achieve spectacular results.

If you want to ensure that your website is lightning-fast for its viewers, then choosing a server near the geographic location of your target audience is key. InMotion has two data centers to choose from: one in Los Angeles, CA, and the other in Ashburn, VA.

In short, InMotion Hosting is incredibly fast! It surpassed the performance mark in both its LCP and Fully Loaded Time measurements.

We are thoroughly impressed with InMotion Hosting’s amazing speed, which surpassed our expectations. As SEO professionals, we are aware of the importance of having a fast-loading website, and thus we can be very particular when it comes to selecting a reliable hosting provider.

Security: How Secure is Inmotion Hosting?

Safety is a top priority at InMotion Hosting. The company has taken numerous steps to make its customer’s websites as secure and safe as possible; this includes a “Security Suite” in all its plans that come with free SSL protection, which protects against hackers or malware attacks against your website. You can find all the tools related to security by heading over to the cPanel Security section of your hosting control panel.

Now, let’s take an in-depth look at the security suites and what they do:

    • Free SSL is essential, and it is not common to get one free nowadays. No big deal; it guarantees the security of all visitor-server communications, ensuring that no third party can access any confidential data. Additionally, it grants your website a reassuring security lock beside the domain name.
    • It is important to note that we cannot see InMotion’s Hack and Malware protection from within our cPanel accounts. However, since this feature lives on an internal server, security measures are controlled by them. There are no guarantees as to how effective it may be, so it’s best to take InMotion’s word for its abilities.
    • The ModSecurity module is a powerful firewall that can be easily enabled and disabled from the cPanel dashboard. It acts as an advanced security measure to protect dynamic websites, such as those built with SQL and PHP, from malicious attacks like cross-site scripting (XSS) and code injection attacks. Doing so helps prevent confidential information.
    • Corero provides DDoS protection for InMotion, a third-party provider. It is a feature not accessible through cPanel; however, DDoS attack protection is real-time and automated, recognizing malicious requests that have the potential to overload your server and stopping them in their tracks with no manual effort required from your end. This feature is always up and running.
    • When it comes to hosting, safety should be your top priority. Two-Factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring more than just passwords for login. You’ll also need codes that are only available through text message or a phone call to access the account.
    • InMotion offers Automatic Backups, a feature that allows you to have your site backed up and secure in case of an emergency. This service is available for an additional fee of $24 per year, making it an attractive add-on for those who would like extra security and peace of mind.

With the basic tools needed to run a secure website, InMotion Hosting disappoints us in one thing: they do not offer free site backups. While they are not among the best security providers around, for the average user looking to protect themselves on an everyday basis from common threats, InMotion Hosting offers plenty of protection for its shared hosting plans.

Will InMotion Hosting Support Help Me When Needed?

InMotion hosting provides customers with a range of customer support options that are available. Not only does this provider offer 24/7 live chat, email, ticket, phone support, and Skype – they also have a vast library of articles and information accessible through their knowledge base and blog.

We tried out InMotion Hosting’s technical support and were pleasantly surprised at how fast the live chat response time was. The responses were nearly immediate, which is great for anyone who needs help quickly or has a technical issue that needs to be solved without delay.

The reason we reached out to InMotion’s support was due to us having difficulties accessing the pre-built templates offered by BoldGrid. Whats BoldGrid? Well, BoldGrid is a WordPress website builder that’s included in all InMotions Hosting plans that have over 200+ industry-specific pre-built templates.

The support agent Jacob was awesome, he fix the issue within a few minutes. The problem was we weren’t seeing the inspirations tab in our WordPress account. The fix was the support agent installing the BoldGrid inspirations plugin. We had no idea we were supposed to install that specific plugin.

If you don’t like talking on the phone or doing live chat you can always check out their Knowledge base.

Talking about InMotion’s knowledge base, we are truly astounded by its comprehensive selection of articles and guides. The quality of the content is super informative; we haven’t seen such an impressive library in quite a long time.

From what we have checked, all the articles feature the most up-to-date information, not out-of-date information like some others.

Another way to get assistance regarding your hosting needs is through a community forum. It may not be incredibly active, but moderators always join in on every topic to provide you with the guidance and advice that you need. This goes above and beyond what one can expect from any web hosting provider.

All in all, InMotion Hosting offers excellent customer service that managed to handle our issues with speed and efficiency.

    InMotion Hosting Review: Final Verdict

InMotion is renowned in the web hosting market for being incredibly reliable and user-friendly, which is why it often receives praise in reviews. However, when it comes to prices, several competitors offer better value and more competitive deals. Despite being slightly more expensive than its rivals, InMotion Hosting does not fail to deliver in terms of performance. It offers excellent speed and reliability, which is an essential feature for many customers. A big plus point when it comes to InMotion Hosting is their BoldGrid website builder, which provides a user-friendly drag-and-drop interface that allows you to build beautiful websites easily.

Who Is InMotion Hosting Best For?

Ease of use, speed, and high reliability make web hosting with InMotion an ideal option for small-to-medium size businesses who want a hassle-free hosting solution. It’s perfect for those who have little website development experience as the BoldGrid website builder is intuitive and straightforward to use. With the effortless one-click installation of popular applications like WordPress, you can get your website launched in an instant.

    InMotion Alternatives

Several great hosting options exist, but InMotion is one of our personal favorites. It’s not the absolute best for everyone though if you want another company to consider then Hostinger or WP Engine would be excellent choices as well.

    hostinger

Hostinger is a cheap web hosting provider that offers great services. Its shared hosting plans start at just $1.99/month and it has amazing performance, especially when compared to other providers who charge more for their services. Plus its customer support can’t be beaten.

    WP engine

WP engine is a top provider of managed WordPress hosting. With 24/7 customer support, daily backups, and staging sites as well as an easy-to-use platform – it’s no wonder they’re one of the best for WordPress hosting. The only drawback may be the price tag of $25/mo. for their standard plan.
